Directors Statement
“Having only recently come to terms with my own queer identity, I have found it incredibly cathartic to express my thoughts and experiences through my filmmaking practice. ‘Dartboard’, in particular, was a useful exercise in deconstructing the often harmful/traumatic and/or sexually explicit hallmarks of how ‘coming out’ stories are represented on screen. For me, the realisation of my identity was not a perfect ‘ah-ha’ made-for-TV moment, rather, a more subtle ongoing process of learning who I am and growing from my experiences. I spent way too long pretending to know who I was and what I was doing, but it was in admitting my own cluelessness that I found the freedom to learn and discover. My aim for ‘Dartboard’ was to convey that subtlety and nuance through symbols and dialogue that, although never explicitly mentioning sex or sexuality, speaks more to the core of my own and many other queer people’s experiences.”
