Directors Statement
“Young men are often incredibly stubborn when it comes to admitting wrongdoing, a lack of skill or strength, and even acknowledging when they are in need of assistance. A culture of masculinity that is defined by ‘alpha status’ breeds generations of insecure men and boys who are more willing to suffer silently than to seek help and/or live honestly. This is particularly evidenced in health outcomes, including mental health and suicide rates where a significant disparity between cis men and cis women exists largely due to the fear of perceived ‘weakness’ that may be associated with seeking therapy and other mental health treatments. ‘Gym Rat’ was made to critique this toxic hyper masculinity (which is particularly prevalent in the sporting and fitness sector) by physically demonstrating, to a slightly absurd extent, just how detrimental the effects can be.”
