The Road from Baucau

In 2018, I was fortunate enough to visit Timor-Leste as part of a trip with my high school. I had recently purchased my first DSLR, and decided to make a documentary about the challenges faced by the small island nation. But as a privileged, know-it-all teenager who had never ventured far beyond the comfort of my Australian life, I found the experience confronting on a far more personal level. While the film still included analysis of the country’s troubled history, it became primarily about my journey of self-discovery – a collection of the lessons from the Timorese people that stay with me to this day.
This is the project that sparked my obsession with the filmmaking process.
