In a perpetually damp, surrealistic medieval world, a Beast lurks at the forest's edge. Only The Daughter knows it's there, but she quickly discovers that her family would rather place their faith in the protection of the family deity – the small and decrepit Boy-Child-Marionette – than take any action. Forced to fight alone, The Daughter must decide how much she’s willing to lose to save the people who may never forgive her for it.
